Public Financing for Statewide Elections in Connecticut

In 2005, Connecticut became one of the first states to embrace a system of comprehensive public funding for elections. The Citizens' Election Program offers candidates who meet certain financial thresholds demonstrating local support from individuals (NOT corporations or PACs) to receive grants funding the rest of their campaigns. This ensures candidates can spend most of their time connected to constituents instead of conglomerates and focused on issues rather than asking for handouts. In 2022, as a major- party (Democratic) candidate, I have to raise $17,300, with at least 300 unique donors from within any of my four districted towns (Stratford, Shelton, Monroe and Seymour) contributing at least $5 each to qualify for the grant which will entirely fund the campaign.
